Only certain economic models are conducive to the development and success of creative industries. Like the article states, the marriage of finance and creativity is weighed with an element of risk. For this reason, in developing countries the a lot of creative projects remain in the “realm of ideas.” The lack of support systems (such as distribution, marketing, promotion, etc) as well as financing, all hinders the development of the industry. Ambiguity and risk is added by the unclear relationship of cultural capital and economic capital.

It is really important that not only our country but all countries begin to understand media production and the benefits of having creative industries expanded to all countries. By expanding this media culture we would find far more interesting, creative, unique forms of media as well as developments of already produced media. This expansion would allow more media to be filtered in to the US. and these forms of media would be from the point of view of people that we may never get to hear from or meet otherwise. It will give us more ideas of other areas and allow us to better understand other cultures in entertaining ways. Also, if these other countries begin to develop their media production skills and technology, they will be able to better accept our media. Countries producing films will have more access to DVD players and theaters in which they could watch movies that were made by American producers and directors. I found it really interesting how the piece contained a section on the different kinds of markets and how that would affect the economy based on media productions as sometimes as an American it is hard to believe that anyone wouldn’t want to experience these forms of media (the uninterested market) and it also brought up the other markets that could be more focused on.

Value of the Creative Economy

When a creative economy enters industrialized and newly industrialized countries it brings the potential of new wealth, creation cultivation of local talent, creative capital, new export markets, all of which act as a multiplier in the broader and global economy. Countries that are developing or undeveloped lose this increased competitiveness in the global economy for the main reason that any additional financial aid tends to go towards education, poverty, and infrastructure before going to creative industries.

Media Creation

Creative industries are seen as a mode of modernization and development for a number of reasons. Many developing nations do not yet have in infrastructure to support production of classically though white goods. For this reason, low involvement, and high profit means of revenue generation are sought, which often leads to the making of a fairly developed media industry. Instead of needing a factory, a small office with computers can create nearly as much revenue, while taking up much less space, and having a lower start up cost. Additionally, outside nations can use this talent for far less money than other countries would expect. There is also the use of sites for filming which are used for some genres of movies and media. All in all, the creative industries market allows for the production of products from perhaps the least likely of places, for the most part, wherever there is a computer and an internet connection.

Global Success Means Being Selective

Media companies taking their product abroad isn’t always the best choice. As previously stated in my last blog post, there are a ton of cultural issues that must be thought out. In addition, you must also take into account the political environment of the country you wish to distribute to. China is an emerging market yet the restrictions over their markets are pretty ridiculous. Since China is still communist the government can monitor anything and everything being consumed by the public and if it doesn’t agree with their views and values, it will be censored no questions asked. This poses a lot of questions for China as an emerging market. With such restrictions, will businesses, media companies in particular, be driven away from the Chinese market? These questions are yet to be answered but as time goes on, China will need to loosen their restrictions if they want to bring profitable media companies to the market. On the other side of the table, media companies must be weary of where they can profit and where they’ll run into problems with national governments.

Chinese Black Market

After reading this article, it is obvious why people find thinking globally so important. Other countries’ media industries are messed up! The Chinese and Latin markets have so many inherent barriers that inadvertently hurt them. While China is “trying” private partnerships, it won’t go long under their controlling regime and love for constant censorship. I recall watching a DVD in my friend’s room of a Hong Kong television show. The DVD was terrible quality and when I asked why she responded “My mom bought it way cheaper on the black market. Everything is sold in the black market in China.” It sounds like they have a worse pirating problem than the US and we should definitely learn from their mistakes. However as noted in the article, the indigenous region of Australia exemplifies a case where an impoverished region can flourish by targeting a niche market. In other words, there is hope for media industries in developing nations.

Why are creative industries seen as an important part of (or an engine for) development and modernization?

What are the barriers to financing creative industries in the developing world (or in the case studies of Latin America, China, and indigenous Australia)?

How do domestic, grants, tourist, diasporic, and breakthrough markets influence the value chain?

THINKING GLOBALLY

It is important to think in terms of well defined strata in todays global economy. Although some media products will and do work on a global scale, there is a direct need to divide the industry by strata. This can mean, first by country, then region and then demographics. This could leave you with a thousand segmented markets. The days of the big company are hopefully nearing an end. However, this may not match up with neither liberal nor conservative ideation. Most higher ups WANT things to stay the way they are. However, there is no longer a need for mass consumerism. In fact, it is becoming the opposite. The marketplace is rapidly segmented. If you can have your burger your way, you can have you media your way too.
